Charge for your expertise. Many companies fail to place a premium on the real dollar worth of their expertise, or what it would cost an outsider to learn what they already know.

Don't copy the product, copy the method. Many people told Jeff Bezos that Amazon should make an MP3 player to compete with Apple, but he knew that no one could compete with the iPod. Instead of copying the product, he copied the method – the method behind the iPod was digitizing media. Instead of digitizing music, Bezos digitized books with the Kindle.
